When 02:52
Hey man, when do we get to stop Talking about rain and running for trains and racking our brains or whatever remains And pick up guitars and sing like we want to? Hey girl, when do we get to stop Checking off to-do’s and sharing bad news, sleeping off booze and suffering all these fools And pick up guitars and sing like we want to? Pick up guitars and sing like we want to When, when oh when Does life begin For me and you My friend? And how, how oh how How about now, old pal How about now? I’m begging you Hey bud, when do we get to stop Looking at tikes, and clicking on likes, falling off bikes and hit the open mics And pick up guitars and sing like we want to Hey champ, when do we get to stop Washing loads and streaming episodes, snipping off nodes and forgetting our codes And pick up guitars and sing like we want to? Pick up guitars and sing like we want to When, when oh when Does life begin For me and you My friend? And how, how oh how How about now, old pal How about now? I’m begging you Hey man, when do we get to stop Making schleps, doing reps and seasoning crepes and reviewing next steps And pick up guitars and sing like want to? Hey girl when do we get to stop Hitting pot holes and wearing Doctor Scholes and tidying our bowls and losing our souls And pick up guitars and sing like we want to? Pick up guitars and sing like we want to Pick up guitars and sing like we want to I------just want to pick up my guitar (C) Dave Keener.

No more controlling, or steamrolling or a-holing to o It takes a tolling space patrolling for the good and the true Now I’m extolling going bowling going bowling with you And Stax souling and rock and rolling, Nat King Coling and uh Oh me, oh me, oh me, oh me oh my I look in the heavens I see only sky And I want magic when magic comes walking in the door I’ll hold out my hand leave my heart wide open Feels so good to say my prayers Even if they go nowhere That’s the way I feel about it That’s the way I’m going about it That’s the way I do it I said I wouldn’t drink today Now what was it that I was about to say Doesn’t matter, bombs away Here’s to absent friends And all creatures great and small Mickey, Peter, John and Paul That’s the way I feel about it That’s the way I’m going about it That’s the way I do I do it, I’ll do it till I’m through it Can you make me understand?

Linear Larry 02:51
I’ve got a feeling, hard to express Feels like fifteen women trying to fit into just one little dress One thought’s coming, one’s half done One was real important and poof, now all of ‘em gone Lemme, lemme, lemme, lemme do one thing at a time Why can’t I do just one thing at a time? I could rule the world if all the world would only fall into line What do I look like, the main with two brains? You got me walking, talking, listening, texting, walking into oncoming trains Lemme, lemme, lemme, lemme do one thing at a time Lemme, lemme, lemme, lemme do one thing at a time Lemme, lemme, lemme, lemme do one thing at a time Call me Linear Larry I love ya baby, I think you’re swell I don’t have a one track mind but I don’t dual process real well I wanna hold you in my arms all night First with the left, then with the right Lemme lemme lemme lemme do one thing at a time Why can’t I do just one thing till it’s done? Set up your desires and I’lll knock ‘em down one by one Telling you baby I’m a one woman man I’m no prize and I’ve got eyes I don’t have the attention span Lemme, lemme, lemme, lemme do one thing at a time Lemme, lemme, lemme, lemme do one thing at a time Lemme, lemme, lemme, lemme do one thing at a time Call me Linear Larry Multi-tasking I’m not impressed Eating, reading, meeting, tweeting, feeding a baby at your breast When you’re with me I want you body and soul Body first, then soul, of course, see above cause that’s how I roll Lemme lemme lemme do one thing at a time (c) Dave Keener 2013

I smell purell Hear a deadbolt door Wait a minute I’ve been here before I don’t know her I only know her lines I teleprompt her With this foolish face of mine Open up the cage I will gladly walk inside For the cheese is good And the cage door open wide And I fall asleep with my soul so satisfied And I dream sweet dreams till I open up my eyes This is where I came in I’ve seen this show before Don’t you go up those stairs Don’t you go in that door This is where I lost my mind This is where the tires blew out This is where I came in This is where I walk out This is where I came in Didda, didda, etc.X 4 Names and places They have all been changed So you make the same mistake again Always starts with forgetting your ID A new one’s supplied too easily Open up the cage I will gladly walk inside For the cheese is good And the cage door open wide And I fall asleep with my soul so satisfied And I dream sweet dreams till I open up my eyes This is where I came in I’ve seen this show before Fella builds a big dollhouse Moves in on the second floor Freedom is everything That you can do right now This is where I came in This is where I walk out This is where I came in Didda, didda, etc.X 8 Everytime I forget who I am I remember I never will again Open up the cage

(Sometimes I think) We’re looking for a pot of gold at the end of a second-rate rainbow Other times I feel There’s more joy in just one hour of me and you sitting and talking Than this little heart can hold Sometimes I want to tell the world how much I hate it’s cruel, cruel ways And other times I want sit on the stoop and let it make my day We did our best how we pressed our nose to the good life grindstone Till it rolled away Have no fear, there’s cheap beer and so much good life coming It’ll make you sick Sometimes I want to ride my bike on the sidewalk, watch those good folks run Lord let me stay in the lane of the righteous, I don’t want to hit any one We built a dream house, every dream house has to wake up someday It was a good dream We’re still here, birds still sing I just want to believe they’re singing, not just making noise Sometimes I want to tell the world how much I hate it’s cruel, cruel ways And other times I want sit on the stoop and let it make my day Let’s bet it all on a horse that runs as fast as we can Give up on a dream Weren’t we fools looking for the end of a second-rate rainbow When gold is everywhere

Papa was NYPD And in the Emerald Society He had a banjo on his knee Playing jigs and reels relentlessly Mama was from the island sun She was a converted nun But she liked having too much fun And playing on the bongos all night long Mama got a bongo, Papa got a banjo All night long it's banjo bongo, bongo, banjo, bongo all night long And papa go And mama go And papa go And mama go All night long I won't discuss personal affairs But when we sat in our dinner chairs I was not done with my can of pears And mom and pop are half a way up the stairs Mama oiled her bongo skin Papa plucked and plucked again Then he stop to get his wind So Mama play a solo at the end Audience Participation I ask teacher after class If they could play at Sunday Mass She said that they could not alas Cause Mama ate meat on Friday last I was ignorant all throughout Now I know what it’s all about Why Daddy put down his pint our stout Whenever mama took those bongos out

Gather Round 04:04
First there was sun Then came the moon And they spun and circled so far from each other looking and searching for someone to talk to And then the sun set eyes on the moon Their joy sent meteors and comets in every direction And one they called earth They bathed it in sea They filled so much with fishes They walked on the sand And flew in the air And made every animal Gather round lads and lasses While I tell you all a tale Let’s all raise our glasses To the making of a beautiful world spinning and shining With no supervision For ever and ever For just you and me He was man She was woman He was all right to look at And she was so fine They left the bar He had no car But he didn’t really need one Where he was living They were not old, they were not new You could say that it wasn’t their very first rodeo They’d been hurt and they had the rings to prove it First they were two and when they were one. Their joy sent meteors and comets In every direction Gather round lads and lasses While I tell you all a tale Let’s all raise our glasses To the making of a beautiful one Spinning and shining As of this writing Doing all right Last time I checked

Me and my pajamas like to watch TV Granpa pop and mama say they quite agree Out there in the world, there might be something to see Is that love in the bottom of my heart There’s a girl working in my favorite store She sprayed me with something on the menswear floor Now I smell terrific and I know for sure I got love in the bottom of my heart Oh oh oh oh oh it starts with a drop You sprinkle atop all your wishes Oh oh oh and then you discov An ocean of love full of fishes of kisses Walked her to the station and we had a slice Kissed her hesitation and she closed her eyes Then she blinked them open and to her suprise She had love in the bottom of her heart Oh oh oh oh oh it starts with a drop You sprinkle atop all your wishes Oh oh oh and then you discov An ocean of love full of fishes of kisses Mom and Daddy say I’d make a lovely groom I just made a baby in my baby’s womb Grandpa went to heaven and we got his room I got love in the bottom of my heart

I miss your pretty face Because you’ve always got it placed against some grindstone I miss your pretty eyes, they’re always on the prize and it ain’t me Your kisses really send me, but lately they just send me to the hardware store Please look at your to-do list, do you have a line running through me? Put that baby down, tell me that you love me I want to hear it again If I want to see you, all I have to do is run home early If I want to hold you, all I have to do is wait my turn If I want you to hear me, all I have to do is punch the radio If I want you to love me, that’s something I can’t do alone Put that baby down, tell me that you love me I want to hear it again I want to hear it on the hour I want to hear it all the time I’m a beautiful flower I need a whole lotta sunshine I want to hear it in 8-track In perpetual playback I want to hear it [again X9] You don’t want to hear it, but sometimes I feel like I just work here I don’t want to say it, but I don’t want to work here anymore If you’d hug me like you mean it, that would go an awful long way right now If Bowie rings the doorbell, you just better leave ‘em waiting at the door Put that baby down, tell me that you love me I want to hear it [again x9] I want to hear it on the hour I want to hear it all the time I’m a beautiful flower I need a whole lotta sunshine I want to hear it in 8-track In perpetual playback I want to hear it [again X9]

No One Else 03:08
Ain’t no one else I want to wake up with Ain’t nobody else I want to wake up with Ain’t no one I want to wake up with but me Putting the heart back in the boy Easier done than said Set your mouth to shut up Set your mind straight ahead Walking that narrow road Me and my lonesome Gonna need good shoes Gonna wanna pack a lunch Putting the heart back in the boy I’m a guitar that’s just a old box a wood Stretching greasy old strings far as they can go I’m gonna sound like an old back porch With a sweet swinging mama rocking to and fro Ain’t no one I want to get drunk with Ain’t nobody else I want to get drunk with Ain’t no one I want to get drunk with but here and now Putting the heart back in the boy Easier done than said Set your mouth to shut up Set your mind straight ahead Walking that narrow road Me and my lonesome Gonna need good shoes Gonna wanna pack a lunch Putting the heart back in the boy I’m a guitar that’s just a old box a wood Stretching greasy old strings far as they can go I’m gonna sound like an old back porch With a sweet swinging mama rocking to and fro Ain’t no one I want to wake up with Ain’t nobody else I want to wake up with Ain’t no one else I want to wake up with but why?

Heard you screaming as I came in Something burning in the frying pan I’m so hungry I could just expire I pulled the smoking wreckage from the fire Little smoke never hurt no one You just rip down the smoke alarm I treasure all your love and all your heart and all that we been through All this and heaven too, thank heaven I have you All this and heaven too, thank heaven I have you Sister warned us, she said by now We’d be crying in our Meister Brau Lot of fellas proved her right You broke her crystal ball one summer night I had a party and you came along I’m still waiting for you to go home Chorus Your mouth is smiling but your eyes are scared Are we really going to take it there? I can see you hiding in plain sight I turned invisible as you took flight What’s the use I’ve already felt the pain, only the autopsy remains All your love and all your heart and all that we been through All this and heaven too, I lost when I lost you All this and heaven too, mm mm mm

about

It’s not easy to be yourself. But in Dave Keener’s new full-length CD “Slugger,” the singer-songwriter has tried to find songs in whatever makes Dave, Dave. Even if what’s on his mind—from advice for his nephew (“Uncle”) to being very, very bad at multitasking (“Linear Larry”)—is not the usual stuff of pop songwriting.

THE SONGS
The record starts with “When,” a handclap-driven song about a major concern for every musician not receiving consistent royalty checks—spending too much time NOT singing and playing guitar. “Mama Had a Bongo,” is a Caribbean-infused novelty tune about musically randy parents. “That’s the Way I Do It” is a head-bopping acoustic number celebrating a personal philosophy that is fragmented, inconsistent, and probably not all that different from most personal philosophies. Among these unusual themes are a few love songs with an edge, like the George Jones influenced “Put That Baby Down,” and the spare pop ballad “This Is Where I Came In.”

INFLUENCES & MUSICIANS
“Slugger” shows the influence of songwriters like Nick Lowe, Billy Bragg, Ronnie Lane and musical styles ranging from British Invasion and Motown to Doo-Wop and Irish folk. Arrangements are kept simple, so the lyrics can come through. The rhythm section consists of Russ Alderson and Dave Foster on bass and drummers James Morris and Thomas Devito and Jen McDearman on percussion. The band is rounded out by backup vocalist Karen Dahlstrom and Bill Wadman on keyboards. Russ Alderson also provided noise for the song “Gather Round.”

STUDIO & COVER ART
“Slugger” was recorded and mixed by Jon Alstchuler at The Seaside Lounge in Brooklyn in April and May of this year and mastered by Mitch Rankin. Bill Wadman’s cover art embraced the title “Slugger” fully, placing Keener in a classic 1970’s baseball card.

SONGWRITER DEATHMATCH
Around the corner from The Seaside Lounge is Freddys Bar, where Keener performs regularly and where he refined the songs on this album. Instead of doing the usual 45 minute set and making way for the next performer, Keener books a two-hour time slot, then enlists three more singer-songwriters to share the night. The result is Songwriter Deathmatch, a fun, intimate evening of song hosted by Keener.

BIO
Dave Keener is a singer-songwriter from Brooklyn, where he hosts the monthly showcase, Songwriter Deathmatch. His first full-length album “The Easy Way” received positive reviews and made the New York Roots, Rock and Americana Chart. Before that, Dave recorded an EP, “It’s Hard to Be Aggressive When You’re Confused” and the full length comedy CD “Them Keener Boys” mixed by David Poe and Sim Cain. Dave has appeared in CMJ and on WFMU. Dave’s song “Mr. Johnson” was recorded by the band King Missile.
